Hierarchical ZIF-8 composite membranes: Enhancing gas separation performance by exploiting molecular dynamics in hierarchical hybrid materials

Mixed matrix membranes (MMM) incorporating metal-organic framework (MOF) fillers have gained increasing attention in addressing environmental and sustainability challenges. Hierarchical materials combining pore sizes of different length scales are expected to facilitate molecular diffusion mass transfer for the optimization catalysis separation processes. Herein, a novel preparation method hierarchical ZIF-8 (H-ZIF-8) particles is presented synthesis polyimide (PI)-based MMMs with good compatibility between filler polymer. Gas permeability measurements polyimide-Matrimid®/H-ZIF-8 showed 4-fold improvements both CO2 CH4 coupled marked increase selectivity plasticization resistance MMM 30 wt% H-ZIF-8 loading. transport analysis these revealed that enhanced gas performance can be related imidazolate modification PI structure H-ZIF-8, as confirmed by N2, Ar, mercury porosimetry, SEM, TEM analysis. all increases concentration decreasing temperature. The proof concept, demonstrated this study, could extended other ZIFs MMMs.

High selectivity ZIF-93 hollow fiber membranes for gas separation.

Zeolitic imidazolate framework-93 (ZIF-93) continuous membranes were synthesized on the inner side of P84 co-polyimide hollow fiber supports by microfluidics. MOFs and polymers showed high compatibility and the membrane exhibited H2-CH4 and CO2-CH4 separation selectivities of 97 (100 °C) and 17 (35 °C), respectively.

Exceptional high quality ZIF-8 membranes prepared through a novel seeded growth method in aqueous solutions at near room temperature exhibit excellent separation performance for C2/C3 hydrocarbon mixtures.
